9 Boxes – Key Questions for Business Growth

Based on our last blog, we talked about the first 4 question to help you grow your business in the operating market. In this blog, we continue to discuss important keys based on our 9 boxes.

Operating Market

The operating market is where you do your business.

The Growthology 9 Boxes benchmark asks ‘Does your business understand its operating market?’

3 things you may want to think about when answering this question:

  1. Is your operating marketing global, national, local? You need to know do you sell globally, nationally or locally.
  2. Do you understand the size of the market? This means how much revenue is available to your business.
  3. Do you know your competitors? Who else wants the revenue that your business wants.

Measurable Results

The Growthology 9 Boxes benchmark asks ‘Has the marketing you’ve done to date achieved measurable results?’

Measurable results means you can account for your marketing investment.

3 things you want to consider when answering this question:

  1. With so many measurement tools available your business should always have a measurement mechanism in place.
  2. As an SMB business you really should not look at activity that cannot be measured.
  3. Your basic marketing tools are your ‘fit for purpose’ investment – measurement kicks in when you are measuring how your business uses those tools

Effective Channels

The Growthology 9 Boxes benchmark asks ‘Do you understand the most effective channels that supply business to your company?’

Channels could be marketing channels or strategic partnerships.

3 things you want to consider when answering this question:

  1. In my business what is a marketing channel and what is a partner channel. Marketing channels is something like Facebook, posters and partner channel typically involves a relationship.
  2. Your relationship channels need to have a marketing and communication plan too – it doesn’t happen by magic.
  3. They all need to be measured.

How and Why They Buy

The Growthology 9 Boxes benchmark asks you ‘Does your business have a clear and consistent language pattern?’

Language is part of your brand and how you show up to your customers.

3 things you want to consider when looking at this question:

  1. Think about the last time you had a conversation with your customers that was not about a sale or a client service issue.
  2. If you could ask your customers anything what would that be – a favourite is ‘What could my business be doing differently to help you?’
  3. If you had this information what would you do with it?

  2. If you have values, you know how people inside your business behave – Does the language reflect those values?
  3. When your staff speaks do they sound like they are from the same business – do they describe your business as you would?
